Risk Assessment Policy

Risk Assessment Policy

Controlling the risks within our environment

As part of managing the health and safety within our Parish, the Gedney Hill Parish Council, within its scope of responsibilities, shall, where possible, control the Health and Safety risks within our environment and to any persons employed by, or acting on behalf of the Parish Council.

To do this the Parish Council will endeavour to identify what might cause harm to people and decide whether we are taking reasonable steps to prevent that harm. This is known as risk assessment and it is something we are required by law to carry out.

As we have fewer than five employees it is not necessary to write anything down however, it shall be the policy of the Parish Council that, any risks identified must be assessed and a record kept that this risk has been identified and its potential to cause harm noted and reduced if necessary.

The risk assessment is about identifying sensible measures to control the risks in our environment and this is controlled by identifying how accidents and ill health could happen and concentrate on real risks – those that are most likely and which will cause the most harm.

For some risks, regulations require particular control measures. Our assessment will allow us to identify where we need to look at certain risks and these particular control measures in more detail.

Risks identified within the Gedney Hill Parish Council area of Responsibility shall be assessed by: -

Identifying the hazards

Deciding who might be harmed

Evaluating the risks and deciding on precautions

Recording the significant findings if any

Reviewing the assessment and updating as necessary.

a hazard is anything that may cause harm, such as chemicals, electricity, powered equipment, slips, trips and falls etc.

the risk is the chance, high or low, that somebody could be harmed by these and other hazards, together with an indication of how serious the harm could be.

All councillors shall be responsible for identifying hazards where possible and Risk Assessments shall be carried out prior to any new activities being carried out e.g. mowing, strimming etc.

All employees shall be notified of current relevant risk assessments and be informed if new assessments are carried out.

All contractors shall be aware of any pertinent Risk Assessments or shall present their own Risk Assessment to the council prior to starting any job.
